Provides indirect patient care in the medical surgical setting. Meets the communication needs of the patient/family, departmental staff and medical staff. Prepares and compiles records in the Medical Surgical Unit. Initiates directions from physician and nursing staff. Participates in performance improvement activities. Maintains regulatory agency requirements, nursing and hospital policies and procedures and standards. The Unit Secretary is an employee who has received training and has demonstrated competency to transcribe orders, communicate with the public regarding unit practices and schedules, graph patient care data, etc. He/she performs the secretarial and receptionist duties on the patient care unit while functioning as the focal communication source in the nursing station.
Must be a high school graduate, GED or equivalent. Knowledge of medical terminology helpful.
1-3 years of medical office, patient registration experience highly desired. Unit Secretary Course completion highly recommended.
