Job Description

The Nurse Case Manager Emergency Department (ED) reports to the Manger of Case Management. Under limited general supervision, the Nurse Case Manager ED collaborates with physicians and the patient care team to ensure the delivery of efficient and cost-effective patient care in the ED. This position performs resource management, utilization management, care facilitation and referral to all levels of care. This role collaborates with inpatient case managers, outpatient providers, social work staff, physicians and administrative leadership staff within the ED setting. The Nurse Case Manager ED utilizes knowledge of pathophysiology, pharmacology, and clinic care processes to collaborate with clinical staff and physicians in the development of clinical practices guidelines to improve quality of care and minimize costs.


Bachelors degree in Nursing from an accredited school of nursing and three years work experience as a Registered Nurse required. Prior leadership experience preferred. One year of case management and/or utilization review work experience preferred.

Required Licensure, Certifications, Registrations: Case Management certification preferred. Licensure as a registered nurse by the state of South Carolina or compact state required. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) or ACLS required, either a certification from an American Heart Association (AHA) BLS for Healthcare Providers (or AHA recognized equivalent) or an American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Provider. Certification in Case Management preferred.

For every 100 additional pounds, assistance will be required from another healthcare worker. 20 lbs. of force is needed to push a 400 lb. patient in a wheelchair on carpet. 25 lbs. of force is required to push a stretcher with a patient with one hand. Ability to maintain 20/40 vision, corrected, in one eye or with both eyes. (Continuous) Ability to see and recognize objects close at hand or at a distance.
